In a recent NHL game, Dallas Stars' goalie, Scott Wedgewood, not only showcased his skills on the ice but also his passion for gaming, particularly Nintendo's iconic Mario Kart series.
While stepping in for the injured Jake Oettinger against the Ottawa Senators during last Friday's game (and also leading the Stars to a 5-4 win), Wedgewood caught the audience's attention with his uniquely designed goalie mask, featuring elements from the beloved video game.

Design Details: A Tribute to Mario Kart and Personal Life
Thanks to an interview from Polygon, we can get the backstory behind this meaningful goalie mask. The mask, crafted by renowned goalie mask artist Dave Gunnarsson, is a vibrant mix of personal tributes and gaming nods. One side features Baby Peach, symbolizing Wedgewood's unborn daughter, accompanied by his two dogs. This choice also served as a playful gender reveal.
The other side includes caricatures of teammates Oettinger and Jason Robertson in a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe vehicle. A standout feature is the Mario star, painted in the Dallas Stars' signature green, tying Wedgewood's personal and professional worlds together.
A Tradition of Pop Culture References in Goalie Masks
Customized goalie masks have long been a part of hockey culture, allowing players to express their personalities and interests. Wedgewood is no stranger to this tradition, having previously sported masks themed around Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Captain America, and other Marvel characters. These designs often carry deeper meanings, like the Winter Soldier arm on his glove side, symbolizing the goalie's defensive prowess.
The Intersection of Video Games and Hockey
Wedgewood's affinity for video games extends beyond his mask. Growing up in the '90s, he was immersed in the world of Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and other gaming consoles. This hobby has persisted into his adult life, with a particular fondness for NHL 24, where he once ranked 11th in the world.
Beyond hockey games, he enjoys a variety of titles like Apex Legends, Fortnite, Ghost of Tsushima, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, showcasing his diverse gaming interests.
Wedgewood's connection with fans has been strengthened through gaming, especially during the pandemic when he streamed games while playing with fans. This interaction has been a significant part of his off-ice persona, bridging the gap between athlete and audience.
