Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka Aims to Expand the Sonic Universe
For Iizuka, this isn’t just a creative preference — it’s a long-standing personal mission. Reflecting on three decades of Sonic development in a recent interview, he shared that his passion lies in creating fresh stories and experiences rather than revisiting familiar territory.
“Over the last 30 years, it has always been my goal to make new titles,” Iizuka said. “Even now, I am constantly thinking about new titles while living my everyday life, so I don’t really think about remakes or remasters unless they are necessary.”
The statement underscores a broader direction for Sonic Team — one that prioritizes innovation and expansion over nostalgia. Recent projects like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars already hint at that philosophy, blending classic speed with new gameplay ideas. While fans often celebrate returns to the series’ roots, Iizuka’s comments suggest the next chapter of Sonic will continue to break new ground rather than repeat old loops.
