History of Mario Day

Although there's no definitive start date, the celebration was embraced by fans long before Nintendo officially put its stamp of approval on the day in 2016. Since then, Nintendo has gone all in, marking the occasion with promotions, game discounts, and events that invite gamers to don their red hats and celebrate Mario in all his glory.

Mario Day is celebrated on the same day each year: March 10th.

What is Mario Day?

So, how did this date come to be the universal Mario Day? It all comes down to the way the date is written - "MAR10" - which bears an uncanny resemblance to our hero's name. This simple yet ingenious connection has sparked a tradition that sees fans worldwide celebrating by hosting Super Mario-themed parties, engaging in game marathons, and, for some, even dressing up as their favorite Mario characters.

Since Nintendo's adoption of the informal holiday in 2016, the company has added to the celebration with promotions, game discounts, and special events.

• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: $39.99 (originally $59.99) - Save 33%

• Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: $19.79 (originally $59.99) - Save 67%

• Mario Party Superstars: $39.99 (originally $59.99) - Save 33%

• Luigi's Mansion 3: $39.99 (originally $59.99) - Save 33%

You can find the full list of deals on Nintendo's official website. The official Nintendo Shop deals run from March 7th at 12:00AM PT through March 17th at 11:59PM PT.

Free Nintendo Switch Mario Day 2024 Verizon Promo

Ok, so this one isn't totally free, but Verizon did collab with Nintendo for a "free" Nintendo Switch when customers upgrade their service. Customers who subscribe to either the 5G Home Internet of LTE Home Plus plan are eligible for a Nintendo Switch at no extra cost.

LEGO Mario Sets and LEGO Mario Kart Teaser

Earlier today, LEGO confirmed three new sets will be releasing to honor Super Mario:

• Bowser Express Train Set

• King Boo's Haunted Mansion Set

• Battle with Roy at Peach's Castle Set

In addition, LEGO Mario Kart was teased at the end of their announcement video, giving fans of both series something to look forward to!

New Super Mario Bros. Animated Movie Releasing in 2026

This one was certainly a welcome surprise! Nintendo and Illumination confirmed the release of another Super Mario Bros. Animated film. The next movie is slated to release on April 3, 2026.

The film's production team will see Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo and Chris Meledandri from Illumination returning as producers. Direction will be in the hands of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel tasked with the screenplay.

3 Retro Mario Titles Releasing on the Nintendo Switch Online Library

Nintendo didn't forget the retro lovers with this year's MAR10 Day. Three new titles were announced to return to the Switch on March 12, 2024:

• Dr. Mario (1990/1991) - Game Boy

• Mario Golf (1999) - Game Boy Color

• Mario Tennis (2000/2001) - Game Boy Color

2024 MAR10 Day Rumors

To cap things off, we've seen some rumors come through for Mario Day so far, and we'll continue to add to this list as more will likely surface in the coming days leading up to the celebration.

Rumored Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Luigi's Mansion Announcements

In a cryptic post earlier this week, Pyoro hinted at the potential for for Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion announcements during this year's MAR10 Day celebrations. They made a similar post related to the upcoming title, Princess Peach: Showtime!, that ended up coming true during the week when the demo was released.

We're not getting our hopes up too much, but based on Pyoro's track record, it's not something we're completely ignoring either.

UPDATE: Pyoro was right (again)! The rumors proved to be true and both games received an official launch date. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will release on May 23, 2024 with Luigi's Mansion 2 HD arriving on June 27, 2024.
