Super Mario Jumps into Streaming: Release Date is Confirmed

Following a highly successful theatrical run, Illumination has finally announced the streaming debut date for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Mario has taken the industry by storm, becoming the first major blockbuster hit of the year. It broke records during its opening and second weekends, ultimately surpassing $1 billion in ticket sales.

The film has emerged as the highest-grossing movie of 2023, allowing Illumination to extend its theatrical release longer than other contemporary blockbusters.

Super Mario on Peacock

Earlier this month, there were rumors that Peacock would be partnering with Nintendo to bring the Super Mario Bros movies to streaming. It is now confirmed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to stream on Peacock starting from August 3, exactly 120 days after its initial theatrical release on April 5. It will remain on Peacock for four months before transitioning to Netflix in December. There is a possibility of returning to Peacock in October 2024.

This move towards streaming by The Super Mario Bros. Movie may influence other studios such as Disney and Warner Bros. to reconsider their streaming strategies. Disney, for instance, has recently adopted a trend of releasing movies on Disney+ approximately 90 days after their theatrical debut, with exceptions like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to its box office success.

Super Mario Bros. has already secured its place among the highest-grossing movies ever, demonstrating the continued demand for theatrical experiences with films of this caliber. This success, along with examples like Avatar: The Way of Water, highlights the potential for triumph across various platforms within the entertainment industry.

Super Mario 2 Possibilities

Looking ahead, the question arises as to whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will be greenlit in the near future. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, is confident that more video game adaptations will follow, given the industry's success with this film. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri hinted at potential sequel prospects, fueling speculation about future projects.

Considering the immense popularity of the Mario film and the likely success of its streaming release on Peacock, it appears almost certain that Illumination will prioritize the development of a sequel. With compelling plot points to explore, the studio will be further motivated to pursue this opportunity.
