Movie Reception
Now, you might wonder, was The Super Mario Bros. Movie a hit? Indeed, it was more than just a hit! Debuting this past April, it swiftly ascended to become one of the most revered video game adaptations and triumphed as an animated film. Racking up a whopping $1.34 billion at the global box office from a $100 million budget, it's currently 2023's highest-grossing movie. It's also running a close second to Frozen 2 in the list of highest-grossing animated titles of all time.
The film boasts a star-studded cast, featuring Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Despite initial skepticism regarding Pratt's aptitude to portray Mario, the film became a fan favorite almost immediately. It earned high praise for Pratt's performance, its eye-catching visuals, and for authentically encapsulating the spirit of the beloved video game series.
What's Next?
Don't fret if you're already pining for more! Given the massive success of the film and tantalizing hints from the Mario post-credits scene, a sequel seems more than likely. Chris Pratt himself has hinted that news about a sequel might be just around the corner.
Moreover, considering the remarkable stride of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there are rumors of Illumination exploring further Nintendo adaptations. Franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong are the buzz among speculators, but we'll just have to wait and see. Let's keep our fingers crossed, shall we?
