Understanding the Terastallizing Mechanic

Before we delve into the nitty-gritty of Tera Shards, it's crucial to understand the Terastallizing mechanic. This is a completely new and somewhat complex feature in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. Just like shiny hunting and IV breeding in previous games, mastering Terastallizing will require a significant investment of your time.

Why You Need to Change Your Pokémon's Tera-Type

In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, achieving the perfect Pokémon often involves changing its Tera-Type. As you embark on your journey through the Paldea region, you'll have the opportunity to Terastalize your Pokémon fairly early in the game. However, the Pokémon you catch may not initially have the Tera-Type you desire, making Tera Shards essential for altering it.

How to Acquire Tera Shards: The Most Effective Methods

Tera Shards are rare items, but they're crucial for changing your Pokémon's Tera-Type. Here's how to get your hands on them:

Battling Terastalized Pokémon

The most reliable way to acquire Tera Shards is by battling Terastalized Pokémon. These special Pokémon roam the wilds of the Paldea region and drop Tera Shards corresponding to their Tera-Type when defeated.

Utilizing Glimmering Crystals and Pokémon Portals

If Terastalized Pokémon are proving elusive, you can also interact with glimmering crystals or use the Pokémon Portal to initiate a Tera Raid Battle. These battles are a more direct way to earn Tera Shards.

  • Two-Star Tera Raid Battle: 0 Tera Shards

  • Three-Star Tera Raid Battle: 2 Tera Shards

  • Four-Star Tera Raid Battle: 3 Tera Shards

  • Five-Star Tera Raid Battle: 4 Tera Shards

  • Six-Star Tera Raid Battle: 6 Tera Shards

How to Use Tera Shards to Change a Pokémon's Tera Type: Step-by-Step Guide

Once you've collected enough Tera Shards, the next step is to use them to change your Pokémon's Tera-Type.

NOTE: this cannot be completed until you've defeated Larry, the Gym Leader in Medali.

1. Visit the Treasure Eatery Restaurant

After defeating Larry, the Normal-Type Pokémon Gym Leader in Medali, head over to the Treasure Eatery restaurant.

2. Interact with the Chef

Look for the chef with a yellow speech bubble, indicating that you can interact with them. Hand over 50 Tera Shards of the specific type you want to change your Pokémon to.

3. Select Your Pokémon

The chef will then cook a special recipe using the Tera Shards. Choose the Pokémon you wish to change the Tera-Type for, and voila! Your Pokémon's Tera-Type will be altered.

Conclusion: Mastering the Art of Terastallizing

Tera Shards are more than just another item in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet; they're a fundamental part of the game's new Terastallizing mechanic. By understanding how to acquire and use these shards effectively, you'll be well on your way to mastering one of the most intriguing new features in the Paldea region.

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and start collecting those Tera Shards before Pokémon Scarlet & Violet first-part DLC, The Teal Mask, drops on September 13th!
