Game Boy Advance SP Celebrates 21st Anniversary of Initial Release

Released on February 24th 2003, the SP (Special) edition brought significant enhancements over its predecessor, the original Game Boy Advance (GBA), introducing a front-lit screen (and later a backlit model) for improved visibility and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, setting a new standard for portable gaming convenience and design.

The Evolution of Portable Gaming

The SP's design was revolutionary, featuring a clamshell design that was both stylish and practical, protecting the screen from scratches and making the device more compact and travel-friendly. Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age, gems in the GBA SP's crown, offered an engrossing RPG experience with their intricate story, deep combat system, and stunning graphics that pushed the handheld's capabilities. The Djinn magic system and puzzle-solving elements provided a rich gameplay experience that remains beloved by fans - even getting a second wind, as the game was recently introduced to the Nintendo Switch Online library.
