Nintendo has given the heads up that come early April 2024, both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles will lose "online play and other functionalities" that use online communication. Yep, that means no more online co-op play, internet rankings, or data distribution for these iconic systems.

Nintendo Announces Discontinuation of Online Services for 3DS and Wii U
From the official announcement, Nintendo shared the following:
Thank you very much for supporting our products.
In early April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This also includes online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.
You can find more information about badges for decorating the Nintendo 3DS HOME Menu using Nintendo Badge Arcade here.
We will announce a specific end date and time at a later date.
Please note that if an event occurs that would make it difficult to continue online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software, we may have to discontinue services earlier than planned.
We sincerely thank players for using the online services of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software over a long period of time and apologize for any inconvenience.
* This includes software exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS.
When will the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Lose Online Services?
Now, the specific date? Well, Nintendo's keeping us on our toes there – they've simply teased "early April" for now. They do promise to share the exact date and time eventually, but there's a small catch. They've hinted that, in unforeseen circumstances, they might have to pull the plug even sooner than anticipated.
UPDATE - January 24, 2024: Nintendo has confirmed that online play for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will end on April 8, 2024. Please see our updated post for more details.
Exceptions and Silver Linings
Digging a bit deeper, it's worth noting that Pokémon Bank for the 3DS isn't going anywhere just yet. And while some "other" publishers might have exceptions, not all online services will be retired. Do remember, once this switch-off happens, the Nintendo Badge Arcade will hit an "error screen," putting an end to all badge-placing antics.
But it's not all doom and gloom. Even with these services winding down, 3DS and Wii U users can still snag update data, and if you've made any purchases, you can redownload your software and DLC. While the 3DS StreetPass isn’t saying goodbye, the SpotPass is officially signing off.
Remember how earlier this year, Nintendo shuttered the 3DS and Wii U eShops, making new purchases impossible? Well, the silver lining remains - you can always redownload your favorites.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
As difficult as it may be, all good things must come to an end. While we lament the closing of Nintendo's prior console legacy, we also look forward to the beginning of a new chapter; giving Nintendo more time and resources to free-up in anticipation of the rumored Nintendo Switch 2.
