While often falling to the wayside of the larger franchise names, such as Mario and Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog can be overlooked when it comes to the news cycle. But, maybe things are about to change.

Updates to Classic Sega Games
In a recent interview with Japanese publication Famitsu (translations by DualShockers), Sega's President and Chief Operations Officer, Yukio Sugino, had several remarks about the state of the gaming industry. Specifically, Mr. Sugino had this to say regarding the Sonic franchise:
"[Sonic Superstars is] a return to 2D action, and although it is a new game, I would like to implement reboot-like measures as well." - Yuki Sugino, Famitsu interview
Sonic Superstars does not have a firm release date at this time. He continues:
"We will develop while selecting which is appropriate at this timing for each IP, such as 'This is the best way to do this IP'. 'Sonic' is also Sega's signature IP, and in parallel with the new game, we are considering reboots and remakes." - Yuki Sugino, Famitsu interview
Implications to Sonic Franchise
That's a big statement for Sega's flagship IP, and implies the company is exploring more ways to build upon Sonic's recent success. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few years, Sega's releases have been met with success after success.
Sonic the Hedgehog (Film): $319 million worldwide
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Film): $405 million worldwide
Sonic Frontiers (3D platformer game): More than 3.2 million units sold thus far
Sales have been exceeding expectations for the little blue hedgehog.
"That in itself makes me happy, and I was also happy to receive a lot of messages, mainly from users in North America, such as 'I'm very happy that Sonic is heading in the right direction'." - Yuki Sugino, Famitsu interview
Conclusion
Unfortunately, this information gives us little more than a few speculative tidbits. Like Mr. Sugino, we feel the Sonic franchise is heading in the right direction, especially with the continued success of new launches around the IP.
Still, we'll have to continue monitoring the situation for any new updates. Will there be reboots of classic games for some older players? If so, we want to volunteer Sonic Adventure 2: Battle to the list.
